This place is awesome. I called an order in and sent my husband to pick it up. He came home with a 10 piece dark chicken meal. The chicken was some of the best fried chicken I've had in a while. The fries were warm and delicious! And my husband ate the entire tub of potato salad!! I definitely recommend this to any one craving some yummy fried chicken.

i really want to like this place. we went a couple of times because its a really fun dive diner and near our house. however, i don't eat chicken and my only option is shrimp or catfish, neither of which i love. regardless, i still like it my large complaint comes from the fact that every time i go there i get sick. like i said, it's fun, there's a lot of people coming in and out, the service is really friendly, the decor is black and yellow. the okra was really good, one of the better fried okra's i've had in grand rapids. the mushrooms were also really good. my meat eating boyfriend has not gotten to try the chicken and still thinks we should go back, but i've been resisting. it's noticeably greasy even without handling it, but what do you expect from a fried chicken place!?

A small out of the way place with some GREAT fish & fries! Noticed right away from the cook - there were a lot of regulars - which is a good thing! When my guest saw they had "Gizzards" and mentioned it - he proceeded to tell me how they prepare them so I told him I had been to "Gizzard City" ( Has been on FoodNetwork ) and wasn't much impressed - he threw in a good sized sample on the house for me to try! The fish ( Pollock or Haddock ) was nice & crispy and the fries really hot & fresh! I will be going back to try a full sized order of Gizzards and some of that crispy looking chicken! I would give it a 5 star rating if the fish & Gizzards had a bit more seasoning to them.

Cousins' fried chicken is the best tasting chicken in the area! We always get friendly service when we go there. You can take your meal with you or eat it there. Once you try Cousin's you will be hooked!

Delicious fried fish and shrimp combo. The chicken is great well even though im not a fan of boned food.

Cousins is one of those hidden hole-in-the-wall gems you always hear about and never find. They only do a few things, but man do they do them well. Fried chicken, fried fish, and fries. The fries are okay, but the chicken is really good, and the fish is great, especially when paired with their homemade tartar sauce.

My friend and I rolled in to Cousins about 10 minutes before they closed on a Thursday night. A Christian rock station played quietly over the restaurant's speakers and echoed in the then empty seating area. Grease still crackled in the row of friers just feet away from the front counter. A couple of ladies behind that counter greeted us with smiles and even though a couple of guys were already sweeping up and wiping down tables for the night, they happily served us plates of delicious fried chicken, creamy mashed potatoes, and deep fried cauliflower. "No rush," said one lady - hairnet firmly in place - who told us she had been working there since the 1970s. The place, she said, opened in the 60s, and only changed hands one time - to its current owners in 1981. Being open that long said something. It meant that they must be doing something right. A number of people popped in the restaurant - located in a strip mall - in it's last 10 minutes of business on Thursday, but all of them were picking up take-out orders. We were left to eat in solitude in the worn yellow booths under the plethora of Coca-Cola kitsch on the walls. Once closing time hit (9:00pm) the staff cleaned around us and both ladies we had met at the counter checked to see if we liked our meals. They playfully argued with each other about how I should properly eat the deep fried cauliflower (with or without ranch dressing was the question). I decided it was best with ranch. The chicken was juicy and the breading, though uneventful, was crispy. The potatoes were plentiful and covered in a creamy brown gravy. And that deep fried cauliflower? Fantastic. All that, and a medium Coke, for under $9.00. If we're ever back in Grand Rapids again, this will be a place to come back to.

This was a 4 but I had to drop it to a 3 since the size of their chicken seems to have shrunk in half. Food is good not to greasy but when I order $60 at a time I expect chicken breasts and thighs bigger then a McDonalds hamburger

Awesome!!! I would rate it higher if i could. Fried fish is amazing, fried chicken spectacular, cold salad tasty, fried okra best i have ever had, shrimp is my husbands favorite, and we both agreed the mash potatoes are the best ever! This is the place to be for southern comfort food in grand rapids. Both if us being from the south.. this is a taste from home!!

When you search for a "dive" or that small hidden gem...you will find it here. There are so many places you can get chicken but I promise you in West Michigan there is none quite like Cousins. Like the previous reviewer said, they don't have much but what they do have it is great. I typically order the spicy tenders which is less than $6 and you get heaping proportions, most of the time the 5 piece actually ends up being a 9 piece. If you have ever spent time in the south you know what southern comfort food is and this is probably as close as it gets to that here in the Mitten State.

I am not sure why it took me 10 years of living in GR to find this place.. It was national fried chicken day today, and Cousins got our business. I am pretty sure we will be back!

First time at Cousins. Ordered a 9pc bucket to take out. The guy who served me took a call on his cell phone while picking out the chicken pieces. When he handed me the box I asked if it was all set and he nodded his head - still on the phone. When I got home there were enough chicken pieces but not what they were supposed to be. There was 1 breast, 3 thighs, 2 wings and 3 drumsticks. 30 min after my wife and I ate it we both had an upset stomach and were running to the bathroom. The only thing we can think of was the chicken, maybe the batter? or the grease? So I don't really know. I did call later about it and all they said was sorry. This is the reason for the 1 star. Not a good experience especially for a 1st time. I feel bad writing this review bc the place seemed nice and the folks were friendly.

Simply tasty. Great prices. The fish bucket deal was stupendous. The catfish was great, the perch was perfect. Rolls soft and warm. We will definitely eat here more often. They had our take out ready in 15 minutes and it was still hot when we got it home. Great service, prices, and food!

If you craving fried food this the place! Best fried fish and chicken in town hands down. Sides are pretty good as well. If your looking for something fried down home straight from the south comfort food this place is a safe bet anytime! Found it 3 weeks ago and keep going back...not necessarily a good thing with fried food but hey lol. Prices are ridiculously amazing! I just ordered chicken and fish with sides for 4 people, everyone is stuffed and there are left overs...all for under 20 bucks. This place is what I look for in a little hole in the wall type establishment. ..great food....friendly staff.....low prices....can't be beat for real.

Very nice staff. The chicken tenders, however, were only ok. Fresh whole pieces of chicken were used, but that made for tough chews. Also, the batter used was not the best, I'd say only half of it sticks to the chicken. Not bad overall, the other chicken looked really good, so that is what I will probably get f I ever go back!

I don't eat fried chicken so my review is pretty useless. I went here with my brother on a recommendation from his coworkers. It's one of those practically fast food places where you order at the counter and they bring it to your table. Super cheap. All the tables were dirty when we were looking for a place to sit which was kind of lame but also suggests that they were busy, which is a good thing? I noticed that at least 2 of the other customers were chatting with the staff in a way that indicated they were regulars. So if you're into fried chicken then you should probably check this place out. :)
